There are numerous amounts of sports, all with differing demands and skill sets for success. It is not just the technical coaching staff that needs to make their sessions specific to that sport but also the strength and conditioning/fitness/physical development (whatever you want to call yourself) coach. Strength is strength, speed is speed, and power is power however the ability to transfer those physical capabilities into your sporting environment is essential in order to use those qualities to positively effect performance. With that in mind a physical coach needs to have a level of understanding of the sport, in order to plan sessions which will meet the demands of that sport. Don’t get me wrong you could put on a fantastic session which will enhance physical capabilities, but if it is not sport specific will it enhance the level of performance?
The specificity of the training will increase as the trainee gets older because initially the basics of any movement and functional competency will be the same whatever sport you want to play. Once those foundations are built, this is when game understanding is pivotal in order to then map out a long term plan which will enhance performance through sport specific physical training, as well as reducing the risk of injury.
What I am going to do over the course of the next few weeks is post videos on my YouTube channel of sport specific training practices which you can use to enhance your own sport performance. If there is a specific sport which you would like me to do a video on then comment below.
